This story by Tammy Delatorre is so evocative and well written, which is why it was selected by Cheryl Strayed as the winner of the first annual Payton Prize. I was thrilled to be asked to do the accompanying illustrations. I attempted to infuse them with the vibrant colors of hawaii, while also giving them a nostalgic feeling without them being overtly melancholic. It was a pleasure and an honor to work on these. © rachael schafer for the rumpus
